How to Capture Christmas

Inspired by the dishes my family return to each winter, this project is a visual record of the recipes and rituals that make our festive season feel familiar. I also wanted to explore what festive imagery can offer brands beyond traditional advertising, creating photographs that feel personal yet translate easily into a seasonal brand narrative, and capturing the small pauses that often go unnoticed, such as a candle being blown out or a dish being passed around the table.

These moments, for me at least, hold the quiet energy of Christmas gatherings and reflect the sense of connection that food always brings, but especially so at this time of year.

The images I’ve included here centre on a collection of my family’s favourite festive dishes, and I focused on the gestures that make these scenes feel alive. I included these movements to help create a visual rhythm, reminding the viewer that food is rarely considered or enjoyed in isolation during the festive period.

The visual palette was built around the deep reds and gentle greens traditionally associated with Christmas. These colours were echoed in the dishes and styling and also the clothing in shot. Choosing outfits that complemented the food and surroundings helped keep the photographs cohesive, allowing every element to work together within the frame.

Lighting played a significant role in shaping the mood. The short winter days in the northern hemisphere offer a naturally diffused light that feels soft and atmospheric. I worked with this quality as much as possible, then layered in the warm glow of candles and fairy lights when daylight began to fade. This combination of natural and ambient light brought a gentle warmth to the images, enhancing the sense of cosiness at the heart of the project.

This style of imagery lends itself well to companies that focus on cakes, pies, desserts and any ready-made or semi-prepared food designed for sharing. The sense of togetherness, the seasonal palette and the welcoming atmosphere offer a visual language that aligns with how many brands aim to communicate with their target audience at this time of year.

These photographs capture more than food. They tell the story of people gathering, preparing and sharing, and celebrate the warmth of familiar dishes and the comfort of festive rituals. They blend the intimacy of home with a visual style that supports both editorial and commercial needs, offering brands a way to speak to their audience through moments that feel genuine, seasonal and inviting.
